Ook in de Top40 klinken de laatste tijd gospelklanken, dankzij Lauren Daigle. Met haar diepe, soulvolle stem raakt ze miljoenen harten. Wereldwijd zingen ze met haar mee: “In You I find my worth, in You I find my identity…”

Nooit weggeweest

Gospel lijkt ineens weer ‘terug’. Maar is het ooit weggeweest? Eigenlijk stond gospel (samen met blues en folk) aan de wieg van de popmuziek. Eén van de eerste popmuzikanten, Elvis Presley, vond zijn inspiratie in (black) gospelmuziek en nam ook heel wat gospelnummers op. Eén van de eerste pophits is ‘I got a woman’ van Ray Charles. En weet je: dat is eigenlijk gewoon een gospelsong, namelijk ‘It must be Jesus’ van The Southern Tones. Alleen had Ray Charles de tekst veranderd. Hij zong niet over Jezus, maar over een vrouw die zo goed voor ‘m was.

Niet alles is wat lijkt. Dat geldt ook in de popmuziek. Al die mensen die ‘You say’ van Lauren Daigle meebrullen, denken misschien dat het gewoon een ‘lovesong’ is. Maar intussen is het een gospellied over waar we onze diepste identiteit moeten zoeken: in Christus en Zijn Woord.

Popmuziek heeft een duistere en demonische kant. Maar toch, het levende water van Christus laat zich niet tegenhouden. Het kan ineens opborrelen. Op plekken en bij mensen waar je het totaal niet verwacht. Bij hoeren, tollenaars… en ook bij vloekende rappers?

Water wordt wijn

Waar de Geest werkt, gebeuren wonderlijke dingen. Water wordt wijn en liefdesliedjes worden gospels. U2-zanger Bono kan erover meepraten. Hij schreef ‘In a little while’, een liedje over een jongen die ernaar verlangt om thuis bij z’n meisje te zijn. Althans, hij dacht dat het liedje daarover ging. Tot een vriend van de zanger ernstig ziek werd. Op zijn sterfbed wilde die vriend steeds dat liedje horen: “In a little while, this hurt will hurt no more, I’ll be home…” Bono ontdekte: Eigenlijk is dit lied een gospel! Een lied van verlangen om thuis te komen… bij God.

En hoe zou dat eigenlijk gegaan zijn bij het Bijbelboek Hooglied? Misschien dacht Salomo dat hij ‘gewoon’ een liefdeslied schreef. Nu zien veel christenen Hooglied als een liefdeslied van Christus voor Zijn bruid, de kerk. Het is een ‘gospelsong’ geworden.

Voor de show

Dat gospelmuziek weer populair is, roept natuurlijk vragen op. Die vragen klinken ook bij Kanye West. Meent hij het echt, deze bekende rapper met al die miljoenen op z’n bankrekening? Doet hij het niet voor de show? Zelf zegt hij er dit over in ‘Hands on’:

“I deserve all the criticism you got(…)
To sing of change, you think I’m joking
To praise His name, you ask what I’m smoking (…)
But I have a request, you see
Don’t throw me up, lay your hands on me
Please, pray for me.”

En dat laatste kan in ieder geval geen kwaad?
